There is a part of me that can’t help but think that this recipe is 100% American-however it might just be the childhood memories of spitting little black watermelon seeds off the back deck during bonfires in the aftermath of stuffing ourselves with every imaginable BBQ salad and slow-roasted hot dogs.
This cocktail would be great in its virgin version, although given we made these during our family vacation in Bordeaux, a little alcohol was involved as we sat outside on the patio and watched the breeze lazily ruffle the leaves of the palm trees, geraniums and lavender.
-One small watermelon (seedless is best)
-3 ounces Gin (or rhum if you don’t like gin)
-3 TBS lemon
To make watermelon juice:
-Cut watermelon into large pieces and blend. Then pour through a strainer and use a pestle to strain the juice.
To make cocktail:
-Mix gin and lemon in a cocktail shaker or small jar.
-Fill glass with ice ( 1/3 glass) and then using the rest of the glass fill 1/4 with alcohol lemon blend, 1/2 watermelon juice, 1/4 Ginger ale. Garnish with a slice of lime or a few mint leaves and voilà! Enjoy!
